“We’re going to roll up our sleeves and do it.” -Jim Thomas, CEO of Itemize
At Itemize, we care about people and treat each other with respect. We value a diverse and collaborative environment of people, ideas, and opinions. We learn from each other. We value our associates’, our clients’, and our own time.
Teamwork is an Itemize Value – we are all in this together.
Creating an engine to teach itself to read receipts is no small task, and in the early days the engine occasionally needed a little hand holding from the Itemize team.
One day, after a hiccup in the processing queue jammed the bus and caused a backlog in the services, the team realized that in order to meet our clients’ SLA, we needed step up and manually process some receipts to help the engine recover.
There were a lot of documents and only a little bit time. There was a big client and no way to keep up.
Jim Thomas, Itemize CEO, looked around the open office, clapped his hands together and said, “Alright, team, we’re going to roll up our sleeves and do it.”
Everyone from the General Counsel to the Front End Developer hopped onto the internal operations tool we affectionately call “Itemizer” and began the task of Machine Learning engine training. It took about 3 hours, after which we not only cleared the queue, we identified three ways to improve the process!
Over the years, this has happened only three times – the latest was an effort to train the engine to understand the British Pound symbol (£) in time to meet an overseas client’s request. Again, everyone jumped in performing engine training exercises at home, during lunch, on the bus, and over the weekend until we hit 125,000 segments and reached our accuracy goal.
We don’t need to scramble like that often, but we know that when we do, we have our team and our CEO behind us. Teamwork is one of the ways we value leadership, company culture, and relationships.
